Blog #3

"I've given some thought to moving off the edge.  It's not the ideal position.  Maybe a place in the middle."  This is a quote taken from the first scene of the second episode of Firefly.  I thought this was interesting because Mal and his crew on the Serenity are hiding from the alliance by flying only on the outskirts of the universe.   Why did the writer, Joss Whedon choose those exact words to say in the script? I think he was obviously trying to make a point.  I think he was trying to say that although Mal and his crew were good people, they chose a life that is hard and strenuous rather than just following the crowd with everyone else.
This is evidence that Mal is more concerned about his conscience than his well being because he is willing to risk his life to stand up for what he believes in rather than just going along with everyone else.  I think people like this are few and far between.  Do you think you would continue on the path Mal has chosen? Or turn in Simon and his sister, River? The fact that Mal decides to protect both of them shows that he is a good person (even if he is a hot head at times).
I have anther questions for you, Would you turn in River to the government to make a HUGE profit? Or would you continue to risk your life and your crew’s lives? There are many unanswered questions and I’ll just have to continue watching to find out  :)

Blog #2 Episode 1 discussion; 322 words

I watched the pilot episode of Firefly, and I loved it.   It was intense, action filled, interesting, funny and extremely entertaining.  What I would like to focus on is how the main characters were forced to move away from earth, and also that America and China combined to form the Alliance, which the main characters are running from.  It’s interesting that in the year 2517, people have moved completely away from earth because the “Earth-that-was” could not sustain the human population because there were too many humans.  This is a very common theme in sci-fi because sci-fi likes to disguise warnings to humanity with an exciting or visually pleasing picture.
This is a warning to people in present day because the future looks unfriendly and scary.  I think that everyone needs to be more conscientious about the waste we are producing and the carbon we are leaving because humans are taking over the earth and doing irreversible damage.  The first step in conserving the earth is reduce.  By buying only what we need, we could make a big difference.  If everyone was to consume lower on the food chain, like fruits, vegetables, we could also reduce the amount of energy we use because you don’t need to cook as much.  Reuse is another way to conserve because reusing items such as water bottles and bringing your own coffee mugs to the coffee shops will greatly reduce the amount the amount of energy used to produce plastic bottles and disposable cups.  Recycle is the last step in helping the earth.  After using the unavoidable disposable items, recycling if possible will help so that the items aren’t dumped into a landfill to decompose, releasing unwanted gases into the atmosphere.  Overall, humans everywhere need to understand that making a difference is easier than you would think and that action needs to be taken in order to avoid a future similar to the scenario in Firefly.

Blog #1 Introduce Yourself

Hi, my name is Megan Hawk and I am a freshman at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  I’m majoring in pre-nursing and am hoping to become a nurse by earning my BSN.  After earning my BSN at the Ohio State University, I will be working as a flight nurse at the Cleveland Clinic for three years before attending graduate school.  At the graduate of my choice, I will earn my CRNA license and start working at a surgery center under highly qualified Anesthesiologists.  Clearly, from this entry I have a clear-cut plan, therefore I am very dedicated to achieving my goals.  Other than my very detailed life plan, I’m surprisingly spontaneous and whimsical.  I enjoy hanging out with friends and going where the wind takes me (a quote from my favorite Disney movie).   My favorite memory is a combination of all the shenanigans my friends and I get into during the summer time.  No matter where we are, or whom we’re with, we have fun and create memories to last a lifetime.
My personality can be described as a little bit of everything.  I have a very wide range of emotion and I express each emotion as it occurs to me.   I’m not calling myself bipolar, I’m merely saying that I am a very expressive person and that I wear my emotions on my sleeve.   In response to the third prompt given today, I would want my friend to describe me in one sentence: “I want him to know I’m everything.”  My favorite song of all time is “She’s Everything” by Brad Paisley because the song relates to my relationship with my long term boyfriend.  I would want my partner to think I was kind, caring, funny, interesting, independent, crazy, calming, beautiful, intelligent, in other words, everything you could possibly want in a life-long partner.  I am a very complicated person but I’m easy to get along with and love to make friends.
